References
White spotting (previously known as dominant white) is one of several known depigmentation phenotypes in Thoroughbred horses, the result of a spontaneous mutation of the KIT-gene. This is a dominant gene, so the pattern will be passed on to about 50% of offspring. Patterns range from minimal (sabino-like) to all-white. For many years, the patterning in Thoroughbreds was thought to be the result of the sabino allele (Sb1), but we now know that Sb1 has not been found in the Thoroughbred breed. PHOTO REFERENCES: Thoroughbreds with white spotting/dominant white include grazing foal photo of French Thoroughbred colt, Paint the Dog(FR) and an unidentified Thoroughbred foal with more extensive white spotting as photographed by Barbara Livingston, copyright.
