- A Kelpie is a mythical, shape-shifting water spirit from Scottish folklore, most often appearing as a horse that lures people into deep waters to drown and devour them. These creatures are incredibly strong, have adhesive skin, and can also take human forms. The name may come from Gaelic words for heifer or colt, and the legends of kelpies likely served as cautionary tales about the dangers of water and strangers.
