- The quarter horse is one of the 8 breeds of horses that has been documented as having the brindle color. For the quarter horse a 2016 study discovered a genetic mutation in a herd of related Quarter Horses called the Brindle One gene The brindle stripes can be lighter or darker than the undercoat. The texture of the coat is rough and rippling similar to that of some Appaloosas. Depending on the season the coat of a brindle horse may fade or darken.
