- Roan is an accepted color in the Morgan horse, but it is uncommon and not very well-researched. The two credited modern sources for the roan gene in Morgans are the mares Torchy (1940) and Doll-Rose (1964), though historically the color in Morgans was sometimes called “high white.” Because of this, many historical records list roan-gened horses simply as “chestnut” or “bay” or “brown,” with breeders concluding that they were simply “high white,” despite actually being true roans.
