- The Indian Half-bred is a versatile horse type from the Indian subcontinent, primarily developed for the Indian Army as cavalry mounts. It is not a strictly defined "breed" with a closed registry but a crossbreed between Thoroughbred stallions and various local and imported mare. Early breeding involved crossing local mares (such as Kathiawari and Marwari) with Arabian stallions and later the Australian Waler. In the 20th century, English Thoroughbred stallions were introduced to refine the type and improve size and athletic capability. Physical characteristics include but aren’t limited to, quality heads, kind eyes; the ears are sometimes curved in; long, muscular neck, nicely sloping shoulder; quite narrow, deep chest; long and fairly straight back, rounded hindquarters, strong and properly set limbs.
