References
The quagga is a now-extinct subspecies of plains zebra from South Africa. Sadly, the quagga was hunted to extinction upon the arrival of European colonizers, but at one time quaggas roamed in great numbers in the Karoo of Cape Province and the Orange Free State. It appears that like modern zebras, every quagga had their own unique pattern of stripes, with some having stripes that extended further down the body, and other individuals having few stripes at all! A modern breeding program exists to breed zebras with a similar pattern to quaggas, though they are not true quaggas, merely resembling the original.
