Chestnut Shire horse foals are rare, as the breed standard traditionally favors black, bay, or grey, with chestnut often excluded. However, the recessive chestnut gene exists within the population, occasionally producing red-brown coats, sometimes with flaxen manes. These foals can appear unexpectedly even from dark parents.
Foals can be such interesting colors when they're little. Anything from the lighter legs on a bay, mousey grey of a future black, or the hyperpigmentation and grey goggles of a future dapple grey. Shedding sunburnt foal coats are also allowed!
